Today’s Gospel passage talks about a serious dilemma: should Christians who were Jews continue to pay the temple tax? Should Christians pay tax to a pagan government? Jesus pays and says: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” In life we may be pushed to pay many “half-shekels” we are not really obliged to pay. But then we need to be humble and obedient just like Jesus. We have to discern what is legitimately required of us by our government and contribute for the needs of our society, but at the same time we have not to compromise on issues where truth and justice are at stake. Civil disobedience is not only a right but also a responsibility.
